The quaint and cozy St. Jacobs Country Playhouse (not a bad seat in the house) in St. Jacobs, Ontario is the perfect setting for the Big Band Legends directed by Elizabeth Baird.

From the very first note, the audience is treated to a dazzling show of four male and four female performers…dancing and crooning out songs that topped the charts since 1930.   Take in the live orchestra music featuring arrangements by Big Band Legend Howard Cable (Canada’s own) which had the audience’s feet tapping and my soul crying out for more.

The visual effects of a two-tiered stage with three pedestals and over-sized banners displaying the names and photos of the original performers for each song from legends like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, and mid-century stalwarts Tony Bennett, Neil Diamond, Paul Anka, Doris Day, and Bobby Darin.

The show is complimented with comic relief and two dancers that take your breath away with everything from ballroom to tap. We saw the 2pm show on a Saturday and there was no empty seats in the house. The show ended with “I Did It My Way” followed by multiple-standing ovations.

This is a musical worth seeing twice. Big Band Legends is a Hit!
