Palm Springs Biplanes – Back in 1940, fighter pilots trained for war in a collection of bi-planes in Arcadia, Florida. Today there are only four left in the world. One such plane is in Palm Springs, CA. It was used by fighter pilots from 1940-1946, when it was sold for $700. It was used as a crop duster in Mississippi. Later it was fully restored in 1967-1968. It was later used for skywriting and flying banners around sports stadiums before that practice was banned after September 2001. It was seen in the movie “King Kong”, and today you can just show up at the Palm Springs airport and be flying in the sky above Rancho Mirage in a matter of minutes.

We arrived in Palm Springs and wanted to been the countryside from above. Every scenic place has helicopter tours or a ride across the sky in a Cesna, but Palm Springs is unique as you can climb aboard a 1940’s war plane, and feel the wind in your face as your tour the city from above. And, of what a tour it is….the homes of the rich and famous (in gated communities that you could never drive to) are nestled into the mountains, and you directly over them. The tour guide we had was knowledgeable about every town, hotel, golf course, well kept secret in the region.

We describe the experience as being exhilarating and serene at the same time…but in either case, it’s definitely a must the bucket list, as the number of planes is limited and one day, there will these relics in the sky will be gone.
